On March 30th of 1981, President Reagan was leaving a speaking engagement in Washington, D.C. at the Washington Hilton Hotel.
While in the middle of a crowd headed towards the waiting limousine, Reagan was shot by would-be assassin John Hinkley, Jr.
Reagan was rushed to nearby George Washington University hospital and as he entered surgery, famously quipped to the doctors "I just hope you're Republicans."
Reagan had a sense of humor - and it helped him connect with his constituents as well as any President in the past half century.
President Obama managed to be similarly relatable - and funny - in this clip from "Between Two Ferns" with Zach Galifianakis.
Humor is a great way to connect with people - keep that in mind when you're out meeting voters.
